Whats the big deal anyone that has ever run for any office should know that it is not cheap. The one that raises the most money only proves that they are the most qualified choice in this day and time."GOOD LUCK GOVERNOR RILEY WE LOOK FORWARD TO ANOTHER GREAT FOUR MORE YEARS" H.B.

If I had any money I would give it to Bob Riley he is the best thing that has happened to the Great State of Alabama in a long time.

Is it too much to ask that Nancy Worley actually post all of the reports before she closes her office? No Lucy Baxley, no Chess Bedsole, and dozens of House and Senate candidates are not to be found. Once again, great job. Is she just lazy or has she finally run the last employee off...

Ron Sparks broke the law. he took 2k on 7/18/05 from a corporation in birmingham. the law clearly says 500$$ limit on corporations per cycle. that would be only 1k for sparky. But, sparks is in bed with joe perkins, jack buckner and the rest of the siegelman retreads.
FBI will you please investigate this mess, we cant trust our own d.a. in montgomery to do anything and the state attorney general is an idiot.

The big news here -- and I mean big news -- is that only 28 Alabamians contributed to Roy's campaign. That's downright awful. Only 28 Alabama citizens contributed money to his campaign. Behind in the polls, way behind in the fundraising, prepare for the inevitable onslaught of negative politicking and personal attacks from Roy. After he promised to run a "positive" campaign. 28...28...28

Wallace Jr. Sucks. That is bad. He also had McCain down here and Strange is beating him. Go Luther. Wallace Jr. is a nut job.

History shows that the big dollars don't always win. Ask Mcmillan, Baxley, Fob, and Hubbert. Moore's national support will give him all the money he needs. Riley is in trouble. No grass roots support. Law Enforcement community hates his guts. Lucy should have cleaned the table. Only 1.3 total on the Dem side. A lot of Dem money must be going to Riley or waiting on the Siegelman verdict.

Why is ol' Roy suddenly against PACs? He sure liked them when he ran for chief justice. Took all their money. Now, suddenly he says PACs are "evil." When did he change his mind? Do organizations and people suddenly become "evil" when they stop supporting him? Sure seems like it.

A sure sign it wasn't a good morning at the Roy campaign HQ: No one from his campaign posted a comment on this site until 12:11:10 PM (see two comments above). They're usually early risers.

Barney Fife must enjoy the high living when he's out of town on campaign money - King spent money at the New Orleans Ritz Carlton, the Beach Club Resort, a Marriott Resort in Georgia - didn't know rich folks in other states could vote here. Pretty interesting reading.

Why is King spending money on fundraising last spring when you couldn't legally solicit contributions until a year out from the election? Am I reading the report wrong or did he spend over $20,000 on "fundraising" before a year out from the primary? What gives? Can a candidate's campaign pay someone to raise money for a PAC? I didn't think you could rainse money for someone (or some pac) else -- no doubt there are folks smarter than me but I would like to understand this. Anybody on here that can help explain? Thanks.

King is the lighest of lightweights! HE has never been gainfully employed so once he became AG, his salary doubled and he started living the good life- new house, new car new clothes, etc. One of the reasons he won't be investigating any campaign finance reports is because his own report has problems. You simply can't do some of the things he did with his campaign money and you can't pay personal expenses that aren't connected with the campaign. He even paid for one of his kids birthday parties from his campaign. But, all this will change. I saw Troy having lunch with his consultant in from South Dakota and this consultant is going to help T-roy become an alpha male.
No more body guards, cowboy boots, T-roy cuff links and spoiled brat antics. Troy is going to grow up over night and become a real man. Heck he'll probably get a new hairdo, platform shoes and a tailored collection of suits and ties. Campaigning sure is fun when you can spend money on yo-self!
By the way, is King still running for AG or is it true he'll be the probate judge in Elba?

Public Citizen above doesn't know the law. "the law clearly says 500$$ limit on corporations per cycle." Nor has he read the law, because the relevant Section doesn't CLEARLY state anything. Since 1981, the AG's office has held that a corporation can make an unlimited number of $500 contributions. Regardless, this section of the law might as it only subjects the corporation to a misdemeanor and a $100 - $2,000 fine. I'm not aware that it has been applied at all in recent years. Common understanding is that a Corp can give up to $500 per election on the ballot to any given candidate -- which would mean something like $15K this year.

Hypothetically, if a company gave one candidate something outrageous like $100,000, they could be prosecuted. But given that the max penalty is $2,000, that's really not a big deal.

In any case... the law applies to the company, not the candidate. Sparks hasn't broken the law... even if the company which gave him $2K may have.

And by the way, Riley has a $10K contribution from a business.

ALABAMA CAN'T AFFORD 4 MORE YEARS OF BILLION DOLLAR TAXUS MAXIMUS BOB RILEY.. he's the type of guy who would raise taxes on taxes

I will try to clear up the campaign finance issue - each person here is partially correct.
A corporation, under Alabama law, may give up to $500 per election cycle to a "candidate." Usually this means a primary and the general election, but can include a run-off if applicable. A corporation may also give up to $500 per election cycle to a "PAC." The question then, is how many election cycles does a "PAC" have? The answer, through practice and an AG opinion, is that a PAC has potentially as many races as are held in the state in a calendar year. This figure changes every time there is a special election, municipal election, etc. The Secretary of State is charged with maintain the official tally of elections, and in 2005, by the end of the year, there had been 32 elections in Alabama. Thus, a corporation could contribute corporate funds up to $16,000 to a PAC in 2005. This number will change year to year depending on the number of elections. The number of PACs to which the corporation can contribute is unlimited.
Someone raises the issue of a "business" contributing $10,000 to Riley. While the particular facts of that situation are not stated, there are legal distinctions between corporations and partnerships, limited partnerships, and sole proprietorships. While a partnership can give in its own name, it is treated more like a collection of individuals; for purposes of Alabama's campaign finance laws, they can make unlimited contributions like individuals can. An LLC is treated more like a corporation along with its limitations.
These rules can be tedious and technical, and it is doubtful anyone will be jacked up against the wall for an extra $500. However, the most interesting question raised above is whether the AG (or any candidate's campaign) can pay someone to raise money for a PAC to avoid the prohibtion on fundraising for their own campaign more than a year from the election. I don't know if that has been addressed, and it might become an issue. Seems like it sort of violates the spirit of the law if not the letter of the law.
Hope this helps.

a candidate can only take 500 per election cycle from a corporation. if a corporation gives more than 500 to a candidate in one election cycle the law has been broken. the law regulates what candidates can take from each corporation, not how many candidates a single corporation can give to.
FBI, please investigate this corruption

the fbi is already investigating public corruption in alabama. how do you know the company that gave the illegal 2k contribution to ron (joe perkins) sparks wasnt a front?

the fbi has jurisdiction when it recieves a complaint or leads from other matters direct such. the fact that bill pryor and troy king have done nothing while major corruption occur(ed), (s) on their watch is sufficient.
I expected a more cogent response from the pro corruption people out there, you people must be left over rejects from siegelman or some other ill fated half baked corrupt state contract.
I know Im on target because you dont catch flack until you are over the target. bye bye, slugs.

The vast majority of the citizens of the state of Alabama are idiots. The main reason Alabama is still stuck in the 19th century is the tax system that favors a very small minority. Riley had the right idea, but obviously the rest of the state is still stuck in reverse.
