Packard to run for Sec of State
Ed Packard, an elections specialist in the Secretary of State's office, will run for that office's top job. After previous stints in the AL and NC SoS office, Packard has served as "administrator of elections" in Alabama since 1997.Packard, who resides in Prattville, seems to be an authority in the field of election administration as he's penned articles for academic journals as well as many Alabama newspapers. Packard even maintains a blog in which he lends his expertise to items of the day.
Packard will run as a Democrat, but has served under administrations of both parties. Though Packard's qualifications seem unassailable, the political path in front of him will not be easy to navigate. Packard would not only have to dispatch incumbent Nancy Worley in the primary, but also face quasi-incumbent Auditor Beth Chapman in the general.
There are too many unanswered political questions at the moment to fully gauge Packard's chances, but it is encouraging to see individuals with obvious expertise and experience in their field who are willing to enter the public arena to serve.

I don't think getting rid of Nancy Worley will be a problem. I'm usually a fairly safe bet for most Democrats, especially the lower state-wide offices where I don't pay that much attention. But I was easily going to vote for Beth Chapman. Worley is an embarassment to her party. I may still vote for Chapman, but it's good to see I have some choices now.
Ed is such a good guy and great public servant. It's nice to see someone of his level of expertise run for this office.
I think he'll have a really tough time with Chapman though. She has $$, a large political network and a lot of campaign experience.
Either way, we'll be better off without Nancy.
This will be a very interesting primary. Everyone in politics hates Nancy Worley, but you don't win a primary by getting the insiders' votes (though you can win by getting the insiders' money). Worley has always been a terrible fundraiser and a drag on the Democratic ticket. It will also be interesting to see how many prominent Dems buck the AEA and back Packard.
Packard may have a tough time with Chapman (who is a formidable opponent in her own right), but he would certainly do better than Nancy Worley in the general.
Am I correct in assuming that Packard has resugned his post in order to run?
I am glad to see Ed Packard running. Tired of seeing Nancy dogged for so long. Maybe she can catch her breath now. The way I see it, may the best candidate win.
ED, you will win if you stay away from the thief paul hubbert and keep a look out over your shoulder for that 2 ton boulder, nancy worley
How can anyone possibly consider voting for Beth Chapman? She has ZERO qualifications to be Secretary of State. This is the main problem with the long ballot in Alabama, a position like Secretary of State is going to come down to a popularity contest instead of voting for someone who is qualified. I cannot believe the posters here honestly would CONSIDER voting for Chapman over Packard. Secretary of State should be a non-partisan office and Packard is the closest thing to that. Chapman is no better than Worley, in that she knows nothing about the Secretary of State's office and she would only use it for personal gain.
i will not vote for chapman because of that partisan speech she gave after 9/11 and then made it into a book. She is a nut
She is a nut and the poster above is right she takes the most sensational position she can find just to make good headlines. Good luck Ed!!!!
Zac,
Maybe you should do some checking. I hear from people in Montgomery that Packard is a stalking horse for Beth Chapman. In fact, I hear that Packard is running Beth Chapman's website. Packard is a snake in sheep's clothing, and he's as dirty as they come.
Packard running for Beth Chapman? That's just silly. If I were Chapman, I would want the worst possible candidate to win the Democratic primary.
The rest of the guys on here are right, though. I'm voting for Packard (barring something wild). I've gotta remember that I only went for Chapman in the first place because she wasn't Nancy Worley. Thanks for reminding me about that moronic speech she made. I had almost forgotten about that one.
pocahontas, you are full of it. you are lying through your slimy teeth, and slandering a good man in the process. You're obviously a Worley whore.
Slimey? Slander? Worley whore?
Nope. Nada. I just happen to have good info that indicates Packard is part of team Chapman. A little digging will reveal this. If you're a real Democrat and you don't want to believe me, then just do a little checking. You'll see.
OK,Pocahontas -- instead of the bluster and the innuendo, put your cards on the table. Rather than simply telling us to "do a little checking," why don't you do our work for us and educate us with specific facts. Otherwise, we'll still regard you as nothing other than a cretin.
Since the anonymous poster above doesn't have the courage to at least post with an e-handle, I won't take the "cretin" comment to heart or give it much thought.
But, how about this...
If Packard ISN'T running Beth Chapman's website or involved in her campaign, let him say so. He can go on record, right? Or Zac, as a neutral arbiter, can approach him and settle the issue for the blog.
Hows about that?
You're still full of it, Poca. You float our some scurrilous rumor, then you want Packard to deny it, thereby breathing continued life into it. An old and slimy political trick -- Karl Rove would be proud of you.
If you got the goods on Packard, lay them out in public view. Otherwise, shaddup, you Worley whore.
That's funny saying Packard does Chapman's web site, since Packard did build Worley's site.
the secretary of state's office is has more facets than the elections office - ed is well-versed in that area, no question - but Chapman is a better choice by far for the state and will do a better job as a whole.
Ed Packard is one of the most honest and respectable person you could possibly know. I have known Ed for several years and have great respect for his work ethic and dedication to his work. Not only is he one of the best employees the Sec of State has ever had, but his service to that office and his knowledge of elections law and procedure is almost flawless. I think he will make a great Secretary of State!
Someone mentioned a debate between Packard and Worley. What a great idea! I think we need to get the ball rolling on this. What do y'all think?
I knew he would announce it soon. Ed has put in many years and is very knowledgable about the office. It shouldnt be about a speech or who has the most money. It needs to be someone who is experienced in the field and has worked their way up instead of getting shoed in. Thats like having a vet replace a surgeon instead of the LPN that has been the right hand man of the surgeon for years.
VOTE FOR ED!!!
