Riley Fires First Shot in Ad War

Bob Riley recently became the first candidate of the 2006 cycle to run a television ad. Cut from footage of his recent "State of the State" speech, the ad centers around Riley's new tax cut package.

It's a fine ad, but it doesn't have the polished look (for better or worse) of most TV ads. That is probably due it being filmed live at the State House rather than in a studio somewhere.

It is telling that the Riley team would focus on tax cuts right out of the gate. They are obviously concerned that memories of the failed Amendment One tax package could haunt the governor's re-election and are trying to inoculate their candidate against future charges of tax hikes. The ad's focus makes sense, but it also highlights the tax issue as one on which the governor is particularly vulnerable.

The TV ad started running January 25th but I don't think the length or cost of the run is public knowledge. You can watch the ad at Riley's campaign site. The site also hosts a radio ad ("New Direction"), but I couldn't get it to work

I saw the ad on ESPN here in Decatur. It is weak. Too bad he isn't facing a stronger candidate than Moore. He would be toast.

If Alabama had a Daily Show, they would have Riley and Gomer Pyle on a split screen emphasizing the similarities.

LOL... i've seen that truth ad many times and i must say its funny... But as far as him running a tax cut ad... everyone should be aware he is running for re-election and if he wins he will go back to raising taxes. I'M NOT BUYING WHAT BOB RILEY IS SELLING. ONCE A TAX RAISING HYPOCRITE, ALWAYS A TAX RAISING HYPOCRITE. and Bob Riley is the type of guy who would raise taxes on taxes

Riley deserved kudos for hitting right off the mark what some believe is his greatest vulnerability. The tax cut he's proposed is good. And the ad is not bad, either. I agree it doesn't look "polished," but that's not necessarily a negative.

The tax cut he is proposing is just another one of his tactics to get re-elected again. During the almost four years he has been in office, He has ordered annual reassements of property, he tried to get a 1.2 billion dollar tax plan voted in, and Uses God and the Holy Bible as a promotional tool for a tax hike saying raising taxes is the Christian thing to do where nowhere in the 66 books of the Holy Bible does it say to raise taxes. So people he's only shouting tax cut now because he wants to get re-elected, Remember what all he said in 2002, He ignored one year later and proposed annual reassements of property and a 1.2 billion dollar tax hike. he's only doing this to get re-elected.

The tax cut plan he's proposing now are the same tax cuts he talked about in his plan for change: raising the threshold from $4,600. Now how do you say this is just election year ploy? It's obviously not.

His plan for change was all about raising taxes. Taxes don't discriminate from one person to the next and raising taxes by 1.2 billion dollars was wrong. Now he wants to cut taxes that's only because his job is on the line. sorry i'm not trusting TAXUS MAXIMUS for another four years

I have to say the new spot is stunning.
He could have stood and said "3 years ago I told you the fall of Alabama was upon us. We faced certain death if I didn’t raise your taxes by over a billion dollars. Today the year of my re election I say CUT YOUR TAXES!
Hypocrite is he. Having said that I have to vote for him. I will be glad when he is out of office. I pray he doesn’t let his head swell to the point he thinks he is an icon like Wallace and has his stuck up wife run. Just please win one more time since we have no one else then go back to your rock and watch tapes of people clapping for you.
