PAC Gives $300K to Riley, After Getting $50 Million State Contract

Eddie Curran at the Mobile Register has a revelatory piece about Bob Riley's re-election fundraising. According to filings with the Sec of State, a PAC called Alabamians for Technology donated $300,000 in December to Riley's re-election campaign.

There doesn't seem to be any speculation that anything illegal took place, but there sure are a lot of unseemly details.

-- The PAC was formed, and largely bankrolled, by executives who benefited from a $50 million state contract.

-- The PAC was formed on Dec 16, 2005 and just three days later gave the $300K to Riley.

-- The PAC had taken $325K which means the $300K given to Riley accounts for over 92% of the PAC's monies.

I don't know if we'll hear any more about this over the coming weeks, but it seems like this could, at the very least, raise questions about Riley's fundraising practices. And with a former governor under indictment, some citizens might not see much of a difference in the current administration and its predecessor. Read the piece for yourself and see if I am missing something, but this is not likely to encourage trust and faith in our political system.

This story reminds me of a quote I've seen attributed to Michael Kinsley, "The real scandal is not what is illegal, but what is legal".

I have had numerous discussions with Curran about his making a career of looking for Siegelman's faults while ignoring his opponents wheeling and dealing with laundered financing. At last, he's realizing that politics and money is not pretty on either side.

Curran could make a career out of siegelman's corruption because siegelman is corrupt. My lobbyist buddies tell me that Riley's 2 kids run the politics and they are affectionately known as "uday" and "qusay". I agree it isnt a democat problem in isolation, but siegelman is a thief beyond question.Hats off to Eddie Curran for another great piece of work.
Curran deserves a pulitzer or some national recognition and siegelman deserves many years in tutwiler because he hates women.

I admire Governor Riley, but this sure doesn't pass the smell test. Especially since one of his mantras is "squeaky clean and scandal free." I am dissapointed.

Who else would they support? Riley kept them from taking this biotech center to Georgia. The people behind it put in $80 million of their own money. The state had to put up only $50 million. Riley's a smart businessman who knows this is a great deal for taxpayers. Investing in biotech is something Riley talked about when he ran in 2002. Plus, this project had bipartisan support -- Cramer, John Knight, even Roger Bedford helped come up with funding to keep it in Alabama.

$300,000 for a political campaign in return for favors? Sounds like Abramoff-type influence to me. I think we're going to see Riley and his kids dragged through the mud for being just as corrupt as the man he replaced.

Wouldn't you give that much if you had it to defeat a fruit case like Roy Moore who believes that biology is a false science. NASA better watch out too! Space travel is not in either the U.S. Constitution nor the Bible.

What is the big deal ,atleast Governor Riley did not try to hide the fact. And any way when the it become odd for companies to give large sums of money.

300K from anybody is insulting to the conscience. our system is a joke. ban pac to pac transfers, cap pacs at 10k per cycle, cap individuals at 25k per cycle and raise corporate donations to 1k per cycle. disclose every 45 days, year in year out.
lobbyists must be made to disclose their 250 per day spending cap by midnight the day they spend the money ( online with ethics commission, they could do it from a blackberry while drunk off their ass in Buds in cloverdale).

this is only a rough outline, but you get the drift.

awwwhhh...our own little taste of Abramoff style corruption.

Perhaps Americans should seriously scrutinize the republicans when they say that they are going to cleanup the corruption.
It should be they are going to cleanup, with corruption.

I wonder what the Riley-Abramoff-Reed connection is, and why we do not hearing more about it.

You're not hearing about it because it exists only in the minds of the conspiracy nuts like you.

Gee whiz! Whats the big deal? Jere Beasley and Cunningham Bounds gave Tom Parker almost a million dollars through a pac to get conservative Justice Jean Brown off the court. No one seemed to care about that.

Curran's story usually garner front page attention. I went and found a Mobile Register expecting to see this there. It was on the bottom of Page 2 of the B section. Guess not even the editors of the paper thought this was that "hot."

The Beasley, etc. to Tom Parker money was to get rid of a potential problem(Brown)when their EXXON appeal came up. At least thats the way I heard it.

Riley committed to this project almost a year ago. That's before he even decided to run for re-election, according to earlier press reports.

This is typical B/S there are more important issues at hand than where the money is coming from.Hell thats why all elected officials have to file papers about their campaign money ,lets move forward and let the ethics commision do their job and leave the best Governor we have had in along time alone.H

I find this article and issue very thought provoking. If you believe Siegelman is guilty for asking Scrushy to give him money for the lottery campaign, then what's the difference between putting Scrushy on the CON board and doing what Riley did with this Biotech center?
You might also ask what did Bill Cabannis, Riley's key transition person do to warrant his becoming Amb. to Czech Republic.

Money given to and for political interests is a fact of life in our country. The issue is, what is a crime in this system of buying influence. I suspect that Siegelman's lawyers will use many of these examples in his defense.

Lets Leave The Best Governor Of Alabama Alone? Oh give me a break. Riley is by far the worst tax raising hypocrite in Alabama, Don't be fooled by his tax cut speech, remember he's up for re-election and the only reason he's crying tax cuts now is because he's afraid he's gonna loose his job... WELL I HOPE THE WORST GOVERNOR OF ALABAMA LOOSES HIS JOB LIKE SO MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE LOST THERE HOMES BECAUSE OF HIS TAXES

Riley is toast. Moore will pick what meat is left from his bones. Siegelman's charges will be dropped by March 15. Prosecutorial Misconduct. Siegelman vs. Moore in the General and God help us all.

Curran couldn't ignore this one, but God knows he's tried to ignore everything else. They might as well call that paper the "Riley" Register. Regardless, it now seems funny to see Goober under some pressure.

Hey Ricky: the worst Governor of Alabama already lost his job. His name was Siegelman. Maybe you've heard of him.

Yeah i've heard of siegelman...he's actually better than old billion dollar bob, At least Siegelman say a tax hike wasn't happening. But things have changed and I'M PULLING FOR ROY MOORE THIS TIME AROUND.

Ricky admits voting for the worst governor Alabama ever had. Now admits he's going to vote for the man who could possibly break that record.

Yeah i'll probably will vote for Moore because at least Roy Moore took a strong stand for God. Riley used the Holy Bible as a promotional tool for a tax hike, saying Raising taxes was the Christian thing to do. So tell me, where in the 66 books of the Holy Bible which is the greatest book ever, does it say to raise taxes? Where? you want to know where it is? ITS NOT IN THERE. If you can tell me where in the Holy Bible does it say "Raising taxes is the Christian Thing to do" i'll be more than happy to recant what i've said and jump on Riley's bandwagon. But i'm telling you now... Unless it says in the Holy Bible "Raising taxes is the Christian Thing to do" i'm not gonna do it

11:30:00 AM

If you can show me where Riley said, "Raising taxes is the Christian Thing to do," as you claim, I'll join you in voting for Moore. But you can't because he never said that.

I, however, can show you where Moore campaigned to get George W. Bush out of the White House and replace him with a nut job named Peroutka. I can show you where Moore mismanaged the courts, resulting in audits that show missing money and missing equipment. I can show you where Moore took a huge pay raise for himself while he ordered the layoffs and support staff at the courts. And I can show you Moore's comments where he said he would never rule out raising taxes if he became governor.

Ok i will show you exactally where. Go to google and punch up "riley says faith drives tax hikes". i assure you that its there.

so i say this... before you judge anything roy moore says, i want you to ponder in your heart this... Did you vote for the 1.2 billion dollar tax increase? because i didn't. How many people have lost there homes because of riley's annual reassements of property taxes? alot. Lucy Baxley, Roy Moore and Don Siegelmen all said time and time again that annual reassements of the property is wrong. Did Bob Riley ever say that? NO. He said in his debate with Don Siegelmen that "RAISING TAXES PENALIZES PEOPLE" then almost 6 months later he gives us this "time to choose speech" or what that speech should have been called, "i want to raise your taxes" Now how come riley did an about face when it came to raising taxes? It wasn't about the poor. the poor and the ones on fixed incomes are the ones that suffer the most when a tax hike happens. so ask yourself this question are you for or against tax hikes? because if you are, your no better than bob riley or anyone that says they won't raise taxes then turns around and raises them because of there wallets getting thin.
