Baxley Kickoff Tomorrow

Lucy Baxley is scheduled to publicly announce her gubernatorial campaign tomorrow in Montgomery. Though she's made no secret about her upcoming campaign for the past several months, the announcement tomorrow will serve as her official entry into the race.

Baxley has been criticized for her campaign's lack of specifics on substantive issues. Since her posts as State Treasurer and Lieutenant Governor were more administrative than policy-making she has yet to become publicly identified with specific issues.

The other high profile gubernatorial candidates do not have this problem. Both Riley and Siegelman have a gubernatorial term to defend while Roy Moore is virtually synonymous with the 10 Commandments controversy. But Baxley has been able to cultivate an image as a non-controversial, scandal free public servant. Unfortunately for her, it takes more than that to reach the highest level of state politics.

In October I wrote a "memo" to the Lieutenant Governor giving her some unsolicited advice on how to run her race. I doubt she'll follow my blueprint too precisely, but tomorrow's event gives her a chance to inject some life into her campaign.

If she ran under her current married name of Lucy Smith, would she even be serving in elected office of any capacity? I think not.

Not many people can name the issues that Bob Riley used in his 2002 campaign. However, I believe his issues consisted of "I can ride a horse", "I have good hair", and "I wasn't elected to an office in Montgomery". These issues compare a lot to Lucy's "common sense" issue. The primary is about six months away and the general election is eleven, plenty of time to make an impact with new ideas. Lucy has been posturing so that people recognize her name first, I think Riley showed many how well that works.

Lucy only has one legislative session left to really shine. She may be able to run as a "consensus builder" in the legislature, time will tell how effective she is at posturing herself.

Lucy to run as a "consensus builder???" What a joke. This do-nothing, know-nothing, pawn of every special interest in Montgomery spells disaster if she ever actually has any power.

I spell "LUCY" B-L-A-N-C-O.

We should learn from the sad example of Louisiana and their Lucy-clone inexperienced unqualified governor. NO LUCY!

Political Stranger is dead wrong. Riley had a whole "plan for change" book that they sent all over creation. It detailed his positon on every issue out there.

I know because they kept sending them to me. Lucy has never said anything, been for anything, or done anything that can be articulated.

Comparing her campaign style to Riley's is incorrect. Ask Steve Windom, Joe Turnham, or Don Siegelman about Riley's campaign style...

As a newcomer to the state, I don't know the players very well. Still, I have been trying to find out about Mrs. Baxley or Mrs. Smith (or whoever she is).

Strangely, even her supporters can't seem to tell me what she has accomplished. All I have heard is that she used to be married to a big-time politico, that she has never been indicted, and that she is a woman.

I suppose these are qualifications of a sort, but I don't see any of them as sufficient reason to vote for her for governor.

Perhaps we'll learn more at the announcement?

lucy is prohibited from having an original thought by paul hubbert and aea, the trial lawyers, and by the black groups. she is, in a word, a dinosaur.

I agree with the posting above about Riley's "Plan for change". He did establish some things he wanted to do if he became governor. However, he did not have the "plan for change" at this stage of the race in 2002. It came out much later. I may be wrong, but I don't think it actually came out until after the primaries. Perhaps someone knows the publication date?

What did anyone really know about Riley's platform on January 3, 2002? I want to correct myself from earlier: Riley did develop a platform later in the campaign, but no one could name what was in the "Plan for change". The campaign came down to Riley using the "no-bid contracts" issue against Siegelman.

Dear Democratic Party Leaders:some years ago we got rid of graddick with our gang of 5. it is time to remove siegelman from the honor of our ranks at this time. he has disgraced us and is a poor role model for children. It is not whether he is convicted of these crimes, it is because these crimes occured on his watch and on our nickel. he is an embarrassment and we must focus on ethics and public trust. He is a lawyer and has occupied every statewide office for the last 30 years, and we are no better off, but in fact are worse off with the headlines he makes everyday. This isnt about lucy baxley or any other democrat. It is soley about don siegelman and our duty as democrats to stand up for what is right. I call on all democrats to urge their county executive committees to call, fax, phone and write Joe Turnham and demand no less.We have only ourselves to blame if we lose in November. Proving to the citizens of alabama we care about ethics, but we care about them a whole lot more is a good start to rebuilding the public trust in government and in our party. Thanks for your time.

Siegelman is plannning a spring kickoff under the magnolias and daffodils at tutwiler. If he had any respect for alabama, he would plead guilty, pay his dues, and leave the state. Just like Abramoff. But, siegelman is a slimy beast and the truth is not in him. I hope he rots in jail for a long time

Lucy unveiled her entire campaign platform today at her announcement ( and I am NOT joking). It can be summed up as follows: "Vote for Lucy - She doesn't have a penis."

What a disgrace. A state more in need of ideas and solutions than any other in America gets a 70 year old nothing mouthing mindless cliches. Lucy should be ashamed.

Lucy Baxley's slogan basically boils down to: "Vote for me, I'm a girl"

Alabama can and must do better than that when voting for governor in 2006.

To the person who said they would "laugh in our faces when Lucy wins the election" - the LAUGH will be on ALABAMA if that unqualified empty skirt becomes "governor" (I put "governor' in quotes because all Lucy would do in office is cut ribbons and sit behnfd a desk - AEA's Paul Hubbert would run the state).

It's about to get rough for Lucy. There are numerous people involved in this race who cut their teeth on the Graddick '86 campaign. They want payback for Lucy Harrassing Bill into challenging and thus destroying the Dem. Party.
The problem with being so old is that you also have a long history for people to dig through. And this sister has a Looooonnnggg History.

that would be misguided to accuse lucy of bill's philandering. paul hubbert and don siegelman and couple of others hatched the gang of 5 idea at gulf shores after the runoff which graddick won.
siegelman is the one the graddick supporters want on a platter. Their coup de grace would be siegleman and hubbert getting mop raped in prison.

Lucy Baxley is a great leader and a great woman and will be the best governor Alabama has ever had.

As for her name, she was Lucy Baxley when she first ran for public office, state treasurer in 1994. She did not marry Jim Smith until after she had been office for a while. So, like most people with a recognizable name (politicians, celebrities, etc.), she chose to professionally keep her name.

I can't believe anyone would say she has no experience. She has worked in local and state government for decades. She knows how the system works. As state treasurer for 8 years she did wonderful things.

- She expanded the PACT Program which has helped many kids, otherwise not able to afford it, attend college.

- She revamped the Unclaimed Property Program which gave over $30 million dollars back to Alabamians.

- She brought technology to the treasurer's office that made it much more efficient than before.

- She created a collateral pool which secures all public funds in any bank in Alabama. These funds were previously unsecured.

As lieutenant governor she has continued to do great things. She has been a no-nonsense presiding officer and demanded punctuality and hard work from Alabama's legislators.

She also sits on over 30 statewide boards, which insures her expertise in all facets of how the state operates.

As for her speech, there was MUCH more to it than "I am a woman." She did emphasize the point, but she also talked about some major issues.

As for her taking a stand on issues, she definitely has done so. I encourage you all to check out her website, www.lucybaxley.com and click on "Issues." The first part of her platform is clearly spelled out there.

And so what if Lucy Baxley is friends with Paul Hubbert. That doesn't mean he will be in charge. I think it's a good thing they have a good relationship. The last time I checked, Alabama ranked near the bottom in education. We need a governor that will work to improve our children's education, and Lucy Baxley is the person for the job.

Great points all.

But, why won't she say all this publicly and tear Siegelman apart in a debate.

Her talking about his trial as excuse not to debate made her sound weak.

Is it true that there are police reports in Orange Beach showing that her Daughter provided alcohol to minors?

I'm sure that's just a rumor.

I think she's just what we need. A 69 year old, twice divorced, woman with no college degree negotiating international investment in Alabama.

The alleged "accomplishments" cited for Lucy above are ridiculous in their weakness. We are electing a governor and her achievemnt level wouldn't qualify her to be a county commissioner. Not even close to a county commisioner actually.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

"Lucy sits on over 30 statewide boards so she knows all about running Alabama" . . .

Oh God I may bust a gut . . .yeah those ceremonial do nothing boards REALLY qualify her to run a state . . . .

What a total zero.
