With Friends Like These...

Ensuring that Attorney General Troy King's Christmas included a little heartburn, Christian Coalition chief John Giles blasted King's efforts on gambling crack downs. Though King has undertaken some anti-gambling measures, they are apparently not strident enough for Giles. Giles identified King as his "friend", but in a letter to King (and apparently the press) he accused the Attorney General's office of a "lack of tenacity and leadership" in combating the "cancerous plague of gambling".

King has shut down at least one gambling venue in Troy and has filed suits challenging the legality of bingo games in Lowndes county. Yet Giles takes issue with King's tactics and fervor in addressing the gambling issue.

With such a public rebuke of King, one has to wonder if Giles is encouraging or assisting a potential bid against King in the GOP primary. Many names have been bandied about as potential challengers since King's 2003 appointment as Attorney General. But no candidate has emerged or even shown much public interest in recent months. Montgomery attorney Will Sellers is an oft-mentioned challenger, but he hasn't sent any recent signals that he'll make the race.

If no Republican challenger does emerge then all Giles and the Christian Coalition is doing is further weakening King when he'll need all his political strength to withstand a strong challenge from John Tyson.

Didn't the CC received a lot of money from Indian Casinos? I remember reading a story in the Washington Post about Grover Norquist's organization being used by Ralph Reed and Jack Abramoff to funnel gambling money to the AL GOP and the AL Christian Coalition.

Anybody have more info on this?

The Indian casino funds scandal has seriously undermined the credibility of the Alabama Christian Coalition, the independence of which was already suspect, given its dependence on business special interest funding.

Although the Alabama Christian Coalition is no longer the political power that it once was, it would be a mistake to conclude that the overall influence of evangelicals in Alabama politics has declined. Not at all. In fact, evangelicals remain the must-have voter block both in the Republican primary and in the general election in state-wide races.

One reason the June 2006 primary election is likely to be so interesting is that it may reveal who is at the top of the next generation of evangelical leadership in Alabama.

Will Sellers would be a truly outstanding Attorney General - if he chooses to run. His qualifications dwarf those of Boy King and compare favorably with any lawyer in Alabama - and maybe the country.

Bottom line: King has failed. Sellers is a better lawyer and a better man. Let's hope he runs.

Replacing Troy "Gomer" King with Will Sellers would be like trading in your '72 Pinto for a 2006 Lamborghini as an EVEN TRADE. Let's dump Doofus King for a REAL AG - Sellers is better for Alabama.

For those of you on the Will Sellers bandwagon let me ask this-- tell me what makes him such a great lawyer? Troy King has done a lot to investigate gambling in Alabama only to have the one of gambling's biggest benefactors (the so called Christian Coalition) criticize him. Makes you wonder??

The Christian Coalition calling someone anti-gambling is a joke. They took millions from the gambling interests in Mississippi to stop gambling in Alabama. Sounds like Will Sellers would be getting the support of gambling interests to me.

Jumping from the gambling issue in the AG race to gambling as an issue in the gubernatorial race, one little known and almost unheard of would-be candidate in that race has made taking control of gambling his one issue. Farmer, and former legislator, Nathan Mathis has some interesting ideas on how that could be done outlined on his website @ But, because of the restrictive nature of the ballot access law he must jump a huge hurdle to even qualify as an independent candidate – obtaining over 40,000 signatures of registered voters on a petition.

It is very amusing to see Troy's campaign workers (you can tell who they are - they are the ones attacking the Christian Coalition over the so-called "Indian Casino" issue) trying to defend Boy Troy by attacking the evangelical right. What a bunch of bozos - are they so idiotic that they think that the way to win a GOP primary is by attacking a core constituency? Oh wait - they work for TROY - of COURSE they are stupid.

Notice how Troy's people are all over Chrisitian Coalition over the indian casinos? They are backing the position of their major supporter - MILTON MACGREGOR.

One of the Troy King campaign workers (Hi there, Rex Elsass!) posting above asked "what makes Will Sellers such a great lawyer?"

It does NOT surprise me that those around Troy do NOT know what makes a great lawyer, so here are the reasons Will Sellers IS a great lawyer:

1) Top education
2) Terrific experience
3) Tremendous character
4) Proven leadership
5) Unquestioned integrity/

Someday, Troy, you TOO may have credentials like Will's. Then you TOO will be worthy of high office.

This thread illustrates the electoral bankruptcy of the Troy King campaign. I think GOP officials reading this should begin earnest efforts to both secure a new nominee and to secure King's withdrawal from the GOP primary.

troy king is an absolute moron who thinks terry butts is the model of ethics. he must also think mcgregor, lowder and other siegleman entities are worthy of special protection. God, how could bob riley be so stupid?

The previous poster wondered how Riley could be stupid enough to appoint Boy King as AG. Remember, Riley is the mental giant who proposed the biggest tax hike in American HISTORY to START OUT his term.

Bad decisions - from the attempted tax hike to appointing America's worst state AG - have marked Riley's entire term.

yeah, Riley made a dumb move appointing this nitwit. As far as next year's election, ol' Bob still looks a heckuva lot better than the other three losers. Lucy, Don & Roy make anyone else look good.

I have a pet rock. Little "Rocky" will probably suffer from poor self-esteem for eons knowing that someone said he was as dumb as Troy King . . .

What a useless forum...someone on here actually posed the legitimate request, "Tell me more about Will Sellers," and none of the people so fervently attacking Troy King had anything substantive to say in response...good work guys. Alabama is in great hands.

thats the thing about 2 headed snakes. neither end will admit to being the tail. I guess roy moore will have lay hands on this mess, then we will have a 3 headed snake, no wait, thats a cherberus.
anyway, it is quite funny to watch no wits, half wits, charlatans self flagellate in the name of God and of course, at the altar of politics.

This forum confirms what I have always beleived... people want to complain and throw stones but no one can offer me a positive reason to vote for either King or Sellers. The reason everyone is so cynical with Alabama politics is because we all go out and destroy the otherside to the point that we end up electing the "least negative". What a sad state of affairs.
