Alabama's Rising Stars ?

On it's daily blog, the D.C. insider magazine National Journal put together a list of individuals it sees as "rising stars" in Alabama politics (they're doing it all for 50 states).

Here's their list from 2003 when they did the same thing (I'm just pulling the names from their list, you'll have to go the actual blog to read their comments on each individual).

State Rep. Mike Hubbard (R)
State Sen. Curt Lee (R)
State Sen. Harri Anne Smith (R)
Atty Stephen Black (D)
Businessman Greg Foster (D)
Atty Pam Slate (D)
Atty Susan Kennedy (D)

Interesting list. I won't be too critical because hindsight is 20/20, but it looks like only one of those on the list (Hubbard) is likely to be in office come 2007.

And here is their new list of future stars (and again there are comments about each on the NJ blog).

AL GOP Chair Twinkle Cavanaugh (R)
AG Troy King (R)
Auditor Beth Chapman (R)
Judge Sue Bell Cobb (D)
Mobile Dist Atty John Tyson Jr. (D)
AL Dem Chair/'98/'02 AL 03 nominee Joe Turnham (D)
State Sen. Maj. Leader Zeb Little (D)

(They also give an honorable mention to Artur Davis (D) and one of his staffers, Corey Ealons (D).)

Lots of big names on this list. But I am not sure people like King and Chapman, who already hold statewide office, can be called "future stars". And a couple on this list (Andress and Turnham) have already tried their hand out at elective politics only to return to the sidelines.

Tyson, Cobb, and Little are understandable choices. But Cobb will have to get some help from the GOP primary to break the Republican stranglehold on the Supreme Court. And Little's future stock nearly fell to earth with his ambivalence about seeking re-election. Tyson, however, is a good choice as he is currently a county official and after the 2006 elections could find himself as the highest ranking Democrat in the state.

I'll also point out that they mentioned both parties presumed nominees for the AG's race (King and Tyson). It's going to be hard for them both to be "rising stars" as one will have his statewide hopes dashed in November. On the other hand, at least they'll get one right.

I've been kicking around the idea of doing a "rising star" list of my own in some form or another. So keep an eye out for it in the week or two.

the national journal is usually a respectable publication. On this matter, they confuse hacks with leaders, or perhaps, there are no leaders in alabama, only hacks.
I tend to think the latter, just look at the shape this state is in from leader siegelman, leader hubbert, leader hank sanders, leader john giles, leader....(fill in the blank). Our leaders have been defined by the 1901 Constitution and we are reaping the bitter yield of such harvest.

There is little doubt from the list that it was done without ANY research of Alabama itself. This list is so ridiculous (JOE TURNHAM??? TROY KING???) as to invite immediate dismissal from any serious discussions of Alabama politics.

Twinkle, Twinkle, rising star?
How I wonder who you are.
Sometimes talking like you're high,
While you think you're oh so sly.

Twinkle, Twinkle, falling star.
Only your name has got you this far.

baha...great song, Anonymous (have you guys ever thought about identifying yourself with numbers at least, just for the sake of differentiation?)

Troy King (best known for calling for gays to be ejected from the state and a publicity stunt with a tracking device) makes the list but Artur Davis (best known for working to improve life in the black belt without an ethics investigation) only merits an honorable mention? I see how it is. I only hope they're right about Tyson.

I would put Sue Bell Slob on the list only if she beat Nancy Worley 2 out of 3 falls in a mazola rasslin match. those are 2 huge woman so i really dont know how they can rise.

how can any alabama stars list leave off giles perkins, nick bailey, trava williams, anthony fant, and the other butt boys who usually are found on such lists because of their money laundering talents?
